Mary Mac's Cafe in Datil, NM

by Richard Torres

Ann Fillion
March 2011 Located just east of Datil on Highway 60, Mary Mac's Café harkens back to the days of a hometown diner. Stated Ann Fillion, owner: "Our motto is "A Place to come to", and we try to make each person feel at home."

In front of the Café, an inviting outdoor patio area is available for use. Once thru the main door, a guest can't help but notice and feel warmed by the stove. The main room seats about twenty-eight people, with a secondary room that can accommodate an additional twenty-four.

"Our map tabletops always create interest, customers like to show where they have lived and find Datil, the VLA and other places," said Ann. The room is decorated with antique saws, tools and bake ware, many of which were given as gifts by local residents. Warm paneling and bold southwest colors lend a cheery feeling as a customer glances around. A corner of the room is dedicated to books, handmade greeting cards, t-shirts, cups, postcards, walking sticks, hand-woven products, and other gift items from local craftspeople." Mary Mac's carries locally made jewelry and gift items as well as books written by local Catron County authors and local art. Two large jewelry display cases contains many items of interest…bracelets, ear rings, necklaces, leather products, with many of Native American origins. The café is cell phone friendly, and WI-FI is available.

Ann and her husband Parker moved into the area in 2006. They fell in love with the area and heard over and over of the need for a coffee shop, bakery and restaurant with meeting and event space. "I love to bake and cook. I have a lot of energy. Parker is a woodworker and great with projects. We decided a café, employing local people, would be a wonderful venture," said Ann. They purchased the two- story building in September, 2009, and Mary Mac's Café opened for business the end of the year.

"Our menu offers fresh soups, and we serve breakfast all day. We bake our own pies, cakes, muffins, and cookies and grind our own coffee. I have recently begun experimenting with gluten free baking and most days we have special items available for those on a gluten free diet. We carry sugar free desserts as well. We offer in-house catering for special parties. I am always trying new foods for our customers and we have special meals for holidays. We are here for our customers, and we are constantly improving," stated Ann.

Ann believes in supporting the community. She opens her Café to organizations for meetings, and supports various booster clubs. The Café is a book drop for the local library. A bulletin board is available for community use. "We care about our community, and will help where we can," said Ann.

Upcoming improvements to the Café include a propane dispensing station and an expanded bookstore-gift shop. Already in place is a daily email announcement. "Customers can sign up for our email that goes out daily and includes the soup of the day and daily dessert and meal specials plus community events calendar, and other information. Many residents have found this to be helpful. The email goes out to over 150 people daily," stated Ann.

Mary Mac's Café is named after Ann's mother."My mother was a very special Lady. I knew if one day I opened a business it would be named after her," said Ann.

Be A Part of the Seventh Annual Forever Frontier

The 2011 Visitors' Guide to Southwest New Mexico and Southeast Arizona
Samples/sizes | Rates [PDF]

"Forever Frontier" is considered by many as the best tourism publication for rural communities in Southwestern New Mexico, Southern and Eastern Arizona.

"Forever Frontier" is an independently-produced annual tourism magazine (published by The Glenwood Gazette) which is funded only by advertising to cover production, printing and deliveries. Pages in this Visitors Guide highlight small towns in some of the Southwest's last frontiers . . . to inform and educate travelers, encouraging them to "get off the interstates" and visit our unique regions.

Communities are highlighted with their history and attractions, custom area maps fill numerous pages, and regional articles of interest are also included - making this a publication that travelers and locals alike keep and refer to. No other local guide provides more valuable traveler information than "Forever Frontier." And no other guide is distributed as widely.

Where are they Distributed ?
Visitor Guides are distributed FREE (all year) throughout at least five states, to a variety of locations frequented by travelers . . .
o Chambers of Commerce and Visitor Centers
o State and national parks,
o Country stores and Trading posts,
o Lodging and Dining establishments,
o RV Parks, Shops, Banks, sporting goods,
coffeehouses, guides and outfitters,
museums, and more . . .

The Visitors Guide began in 2003, was published in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2009. Economic factors in 2008 and 2010 resulted in a delay of what was originally an annual publication. This year, Forever Frontier is planned to go to press in April, with distribution beginning immediately. The closing date for this edition has not been set, but production will continue through February and March.

Forever Frontier 2011 (the seventh annual edition) will be a glossy magazine format publication featuring a majority of four-color pages with some black-and-white pages. Total page size will be determined by the number of participating communities. 50,000 copies of The Guide will be distributed FREE - all year - within FIVE states (New Mexico, Arizona, Texas, and Southern Colorado, Utah, and perhaps Oklahoma this year) - far beyond each community's usual area of promotion.

Advertisers are Invited to Reserve Space Now
Supporting "Forever Frontier" with your ad:
o features your own business,
o promotes a page for your community, and
o makes other pages in the Guide possible, including . . . community attractions and photographs, history and culture (old and new), visitor services listings, recreational information, a regional calendar of events, and more, all to familiarize visitors with our regions.

Please Respond Early
Promote your community and business beyond your usual area - be part of this year's Forever Frontier!
