7-10 Hashknife Pony Express 200 mile route from Holbrook to Scottsdale, Arizona The 54th Annual Hashknife Pony Express will begin its trail once again, drawing attention to the days when mail in Arizona was delivered on horseback. Horseback riders start the trail in Holbrook, stop in Payson, and end in Scottsdale, delivering first class mail along the way. Taylor is the author or co-author of three books -- "New Mexico: Bloody Valverde," "The Battle of Glorieta Pass," and "Dejad a Los Ninos." The lecture coincides with the 150th anniversary of the Confederate Campaign across New Mexico in February-March 1862. Admission is a suggested donation of $2.

9-12 Tucson Gem & Mineral Show Tucson Convention Center, Tucson, Arizona This acclaimed show is held every year on the second full weekend of February. It has set the standard for gem and mineral shows around the world, and is now the largest gem and mineral show in the United States. It is the cornerstone event of the Tucson Gem, Mineral & Fossil Showcase, bringing 55,000 visitors to Tucson annually. The Show is open to the public and presents educational exhibits and retail dealers only. 11-12 Shakespeare Ghost Town Guided Tour Lordsburg, NM Shakespeare Ghost Town is the remains of a pioneer southwestern town. From a small settlement on the stage and emigrant trail to California, it grew in 1870 with a silver strike and the diamond swindle to a town of considerable size under the name of Ralston City, or the Burro Mines. In 1879, mine promoters changed the name to Shakespeare and prospered until the 1893 depression. The town has been owned since 1935 by the Hill family and they have tried to preserve the old buildings and history without commercializing the place. A guided tour of the buildings takes 1 1/2 hours. Admission fee is $4 for adults and $3 for children ages 6 through 17. Tours are at 10 am and 2 pm. 575-542-9034

11-12 Verde Canyon Railroad Centennial Celebration ~ 100 Years of Railroading Verde Canyon Railroad Train Depot, Clarksdale, Arizona Our Centennial Celebration, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., is free to the public. The train departs each day at 2 p.m. and requires a ticket purchase. Verde Canyon Railroad's knowledgeable staff will take visitors on a complimentary 20-minute tour of their vintage engines, only two of 10 remaining in North America; through the mid-last century passenger cars which once linked America coast to coast, and on a tour of the John Bell Museum which highlights the Railroad's storied past. New to the depot is the special event's tent, where free exhibitions celebrating the Verde Valley will be on display. Agriculture, history, wildlife conservation and Native American cultures will be represented. 11& 25 Tours of Fort Bayard Fort Bayard Historic Preservation Society will celebrate "Black History" month at Fort Bayard National Historic Landmark with tours on February 11 and 25. Walking tours, approximately 1-1/2 hours) begin at 9:30 from the Commanding Officers Quarter's located on the west side of the parade ground. 25 20th Annual Expanding Your Horizons Conference Registration for the 2012 EYH conference starts on January 17. The Grant County AAUW (American Association of University Women) will be hosting the 20th annual Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) conference on Saturday, February 25, 2012 on the WNMU campus. This is a conference open to 5th - 8th grade girls in the four southwest counties of New Mexico: Grant, Catron, Luna and Hidalgo. Registration begins on January 17 when the girls will receive registration forms from their math or science teacher. The conference is free but girls must preregister. Each girl will be able to attend 3 hands on workshops by role model women in science, technology, engineering and mathematic fields. 10-11 Shakespeare Ghost Town Guided Tour Lordsburg NM Shakespeare Ghost Town is the remains of a pioneer southwestern town. From a small settlement on the stage and emigrant trail to California, it grew in 1870 with a silver strike and the diamond swindle to a town of considerable size under the name of Ralston City, or the Burro Mines. In 1879, mine promoters changed the name to Shakespeare and prospered until the 1893 depression. The town has been owned since 1935 by the Hill family and they have tried to preserve the old buildings and history without commercializing the place. A guided tour of the buildings takes 1 1/2 hours. Admission fee is $4 for adults and $3 for children ages 6 through 17. Tours are at 10 am and 2 pm. 575-542-9034

10-11 Civil War in the Southwest Picacho Peak State Park, north of Tucson, Arizona Each year hundreds of spectators descend on Picacho Peak State Park to watch re-enactments of an Arizona Civil War skirmish and the New Mexico battles of Glorieta and Val Verde. Visitors travel from around the country to experience the three fascinating historic re-enacments complete with lifestyles of the soldiers in the southwest during the 1860's. More than 200 re-enactors come from many states and camp out at the park with their authentic Civil War camping gear. Ongoing Historical Mine Tours of The Mining District Near Silver City, NM The Mining District Historical mine tour begins at the Bayard City Hall on the second Tuesday of every month. People are asked to call the City Hall at 537-3327 and let them know you plan to attend the tour so we will know what size bus to request. The price of the tour is $5.00 and a tour guide and brochures will be furnished. The tour goes from Bayard to Santa Rita with five stops in between where the guide will give a bit of history and interesting happenings in the local underground mines at each stop.
